RFID toll to debut this week

The News

  • In a first, the RFID-based Automated Electronic Toll Collection System is all set to become functional in Delhi.

 

Context

  • Entry of non-Delhi-destined goods vehicles have from long contributed to pollution and vehicular congestion in Delhi.
  • Up to 1 lakh vehicles enter Delhi on a daily basis from surrounding states.
  • Measures adopted to curb pollution from non-destined commercial vehicles include:
  • Ban on entry of all inter-state goods vehicles passing not destined for Delhi (as per 2002 SC order)
  • Toll Tax to carry goods to and from Delhi
  • Levy of environment compensation charge. (As per the Supreme Court order of 2015)
  • In October 2015, the Supreme Court ordered the collection of the environment compensation charge from two and multi-axle commercial vehicles.
  • Once ECC was implemented within two months, there was a decline in the number of trucks entering the capital by at least 20%.

 

About Radio-frequency Identification (RFID):

  • Radio-frequency Identification (RFID) is a general term used for a system that communicates using radio waves between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an object.
  • RFID systems are typically made up of three components namely:
    • An antenna (also called reader or interrogator)
    • Tag (transponder)
    • A software system

Working:

  • When a RFID tag passes through the electromagnetic field of the radio signal, it will be detected.
  • Then the reader decodes the data stored in the tag and the data transferred in to the software system for processing.
  • The data obtained from the tag may contain information about products such as price, date of purchase, information about location, etc.

Applications:

  • RFID has the ability to track moving objects.
  • Currently RFID is widely used for asset tracking, tracking parts in manufacturing processes, tracking shipments in supply chains, retailing, payment systems like road tolls and for access controlling for security purposes.

 

About RFID-based Automated Electronic Toll Collection System (ETCS)

  • RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification.
  • It employs
  1. RFID tag on the windscreen of the vehicle which is nothing but a transponder.
  2. The RFID tag is programmed with customer details.
  3. An antenna at the toll station which beams a radio wave to scan the RFID tag whenever the vehicle moves past it.
  4. A transceiver with a decoder to interpret the data

 

 

Significance

  • Delhi ETCS will incorporate data of all vehicles entering and leaving the city.
  • This will help block blacklisted vehicles.
  • It will help curb vehicular congestion in the city and at toll plazas.
  • It enables continuous traffic flow at toll-plazas and thus expected to cut traffic jams in city.
  • It will help curb vehicular pollution in the city.
